To support the newly opened road, footpaths and cycleways that run through York Central, a pedestrian footbridge is being built alongside the existing rail bridge at Water End to provide for safer access into the new development.
There will be a temporary road closure at Water End from 9pm Friday 17 October until 12am Monday 20 October, during this time there will be no access between the A19 and the A59. The diversion for drivers will be clearly signposted and for pedestrians there will be a free shuttle bus – which will take approximately 20 minutes.
The road closure is needed to allow the new footbridge to be lifted into place and because of the size of the bridge specialist cranes are needed.
The steel sections, which have been built on site, will be moved during Saturday to be on the road ready for two specialist cranes.
The bridge can only be lifted into place when the railway line is not in use and will therefore take place over night on Saturday – as long as it is not too windy for the cranes to operate safely.
This is the first of two new bridges that are part of the next phase of the York Central infrastructure works and is a new pedestrian and cycle bridge to run alongside the existing Severus Bridge.
This new bridge will mean that the project team can undertake lane widening on the existing road bridge, creating a dedicated right turn lane into the new road through York Central at a later phase of the project.
The bridge will only open in 2027 when all other work to build the junction into the development is completed.
With this kind of lift, we might be restricted by the weather. If wind speeds are too high, we will not be able to complete this activity and a new date will have to be set.
The bridge:
- Weighs 321 tonnes – this is the same as around 64 male elephants
- Is 76 metres long – which is longer than the height of York Minster’s central tower or as long as 7 double decker buses
- 7.5 metres wide – wider than a football goal
