Public Event to explain new road through York Central

A public event is being hosted by John Sisk & Son Ltd, from 2:00pm to 8:00pm on Wednesday 7 May, on behalf of the York Central Partnership, for people to find out about the new road that will run through the middle of York Central providing a safer and improved route into the City.

Members of the public are invited to visit St Barnabas Church, on Jubilee Terrace to see the plans of the new road and to meet with members of the project team to have any questions answered. The first phase of the new road will provide an upgraded alternative to Leeman Road running from Salisbury Road to ‘Marble Arch’, providing separate, wider pedestrian and cycle paths alongside the new road.

Leon Guyett, Project Director on behalf of Homes England and Network Rail, says:

“The opening of the first phase of the new road is a huge step forward for the project, providing safer and more attractive journeys into the city centre for pedestrians, cyclists, bus users and car drivers.”

“The diversion of Leeman Road onto this new route will not only provide modern sustainable transport infrastructure but will also assist in unlocking York Central for new homes, public realm and commercial space.”

One of the largest city centre brownfield regeneration sites in England, York Central has unprecedented support from central, regional and local government, with £155m already committed to building key upfront infrastructure. Work began in Summer 2022 on £100 million worth of new infrastructure which in the end will include over two kilometres of new roads plus public footpaths and cycle ways, as well as new utilities. The next phase will include building two new bridges over the East Coast mainline to provide a further York Central connection directly to Water End.

In 2024 a strategic developer was appointed to provide up to 2,500 homes, minimum of 20% of which will be affordable, create over 1 million sq. ft. of commercial space for offices, retail and leisure and provide a significant boost for the local economy with potential to create up to 6,500 jobs.

In addition, the development will also enable a multi-million pound extension to the National Railway Museum and a new accessible western railway station entrance.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend the event on Wednesday 7 May from 2:00 pm to 8:00pm at St Barnabas Church, Jubilee Terrace, Leeman Rd, York YO26 4YZ.
